Gary R. Hall
The 5K Zone
Gary is a 1955 graduate of Everett High School in Everett, WA, where for two years he studied German. Immediately after graduation Gary volunteered for military conscription. Fortunately, after training as a continuous wave (CW) radio operator, he was assigned in June of 1956 to duty in West Germany.
Later, as a career soldier, Gary totaled over twelve years in West Germany between 1956 and 1976. Highlights of his career in West Germany were the Berlin Wall crisis; as a member of a unit in close proximity to the 5K Zone; as an instructor of communications subjects to all ranks including both US and NATO officers; and last, but not least, providing communications support for movement of classified weapons by helicopter.
After retirement from the army, Gary attended and graduated from Bellevue, WA, Community College, and the University of Washington, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Resources.
Gary began researching the Sudetenland crisis in 1999. Combined with knowledge gained from previous trips to Russia, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia, the basis for "The 5K Zone" was formed. Gary now lives in Everett, WA.
